What We Believe

For a group of people to maintain unified order and organizational structure for any length of time, they must be united in their goals, purposes, and direction. The mission of the Harrison & Willow Church of Christ is to follow Jesus wherever He leads us, do whatever He directs us to do in the manner that He sets forth, and allow Him to provide in His own way. We strive to please Him in all that we do and we encourage others to follow in His footsteps. The following statements are not intended to be exhaustive. Through them, however, we hope to express our goals, purposes, and direction.

 We believe:
1. That the Bible is the Word of God. It alone provides sufficient guidance for all of life's situations and events (2 Timothy 3:15-17). It is divided into two major parts (Old Testament and New Testament). The major message of the Old Testament is "Jesus is coming". The emphatic message of the New Testament is "Jesus has come and will come again". It is further subdivided into 66 books written under God's direct guidance by about 40 different men. It is simple enough to understand, yet complex enough to meet every human need. Through this book we learn God's will for each human being.

 2. That God created and continues to sustain the world. We accept as true the creation explanation as presented in the Bible. The Bible speaks of God's continued involvement in our world through characters, encounters, and historical events that are supported throughout secular history. "It is in Him that we live and breathe and have our being" (Acts 17:24-31).

 3. That the Godhead is made up of 3 distinct personalities (Matthew 3:16-17; John 1:1-4,14). It is difficult, if not impossible, for mortal human beings to fully grasp the "fullness" of a spiritual God. How God can be everywhere at once is not clearly understood by the limited human mind, yet scripture teaches us that He is everywhere ("omnipresent"). He know all ("omniscient") yet allows human choice. Although He is all-powerful ("omnipotent"), He exercises a "permissive will" as presented in the Book of Job. Like the wind that cannot be seen exists, so God is.

 4. That God wants all human beings to be saved through Jesus, the Christ. "For God sent not His son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved." (John 3:17) Regardless of our past, God makes a way for our salvation. We can have this salvation through obeying His instructions as found in His word -- the Bible. (see also Ephesians 1:3ff)

 5. Jesus, the Christ, is owner and director of the church of the Bible. No human is empowered with right of decision regarding foundational matters of the church. The acceptable names, organizational structure, membership guidelines and roles, worship, etc are all dictated by Jesus Christ. "And has put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be the head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of him that filleth all in all." (Ephesians 1:22-23).

 6. There is life after death. In the judgment scene of Matthew 25:31-46, Jesus teaches concerning accountability for our behavior while in this life. He concludes with the following statement: "and these shall go away into everlasting punishment; but the righteous into life eternal.
It is our goal to reach as many as possible with the saving gospel of Jesus Christ. (1 Timothy 2:4-5) We make an effort to assist every person with the opportunity to make an educated decision about their own eternal future. In addition to our invitation to share our worship, we offer home Bible studies, Bible Correspondence courses, and lessons / sermons on tape upon request free of charge. (In the near future, CD recordings will be available upon request)

It is our purpose to honor God through Jesus according to His wishes. We conclude that He knows exactly what He wants. He is the audience and we are the participants. Our job is to please Him. Therefore, we strive to live, work, and worship as he instructs.

We make an avid attempt to follow the directions of the Bible in all matter of faith and practice. By doing so, we enjoy a special relationship with God through Jesus, the Christ. We exist to please Him and He continues to care for us.
